The craft

Kalamkari means pen-work. Srikalahasti draws it by hand.

Two styles share the name. Machilipatnam kalamkari is block-printed. Srikalahasti kalamkari β€” the style practiced in this town, drawn entirely freehand with a bamboo or date-palm pen called the kalam β€” is the one that once served temple narrative cloths and epic storytelling. What follows is how the tradition is executed; every studio's practice varies.

Pen before pattern

In Srikalahasti style there is no printing block β€” outlines flow from the kalam pen in one hand-steadied line, scene after scene. Trees of life, temple chariots, birds, deities and village life repeat across centuries of cloth.

Colour from the land

Madder root gives reds; iron-ferric solutions and myrobalan give blacks and buffs; indigo gives blue. Craft writers repeatedly note the role of local water in the dye bath. Colors settle slowly, cloth by cloth.

Patient cloth

The making cycle is long β€” washing, bleaching, myrobalan tempering, outlining, dye-washes repeated across the ~23 steps that craft literature describes for Srikalahasti kalamkari. Days pass before one cloth is done.

How to order from this studio

  1. Call the listed number β€” 091825 14652. It is the number the studio publishes on its Google Maps listing.
  2. Follow the WhatsApp channel β€” @Yogeshwar Kalankari β†—. It is the only web presence the studio maintains β€” its self-description: β€œHand made work, Natural colours”.
  3. Ask for the catalogue β€” the studio does not publish an online price list or catalogue. Product photos, sizes and prices are best asked for directly.

One caution from us: this page explains the public side of a small artisan business. It deliberately does not invent products, prices or delivery promises. Whatever the studio confirms by phone is the truth of the catalog.
